lower right back pain

For several months, my lower right back has been troubling me and makes my right leg shoot pains or just ache. Now it is cracking at times when I reach or just sit and lean foward. I am also having a harder time putting on socks because leg and back hurts. I have been wandering if it is my sciatic nerve and if it is, what kind of excercise or help can I do for myself to improve the pain. I sure don't want it to get worse. I am female, and 47 years old, could it be arthritis???? Please advise. Thanks
