Sharp pain in upper ceter of back

Every once in awhile I have a huge pain in the center of my back, it seems that if I stretch it out is seems to be better. It usually last a couple of days but now it seems to be there more often but not as intense.I'am a occasional cigar smoker I haven't had a cigarette in 10 years. Thanks for you help Greg
