lump on back/back pressure

Hi, my boyfriend has had a feeling of pressure in the middle of his back next to his spine for a few weeks now. He says it feels like someone in constantly kneeing him in the back.It has gradually got worse and now there is a visible raised bump there about 3 inches in diameter. It does not hurt, please tell me what you think it might be!! Thanks...
