My child was dx with a smaller than usual acl. I believe she was born that way. She is now 6 years old and just now showing me how she can sit "Indian style" and pop her tibia in and out of position. She claims that she has always (as long as she can remember) been able to do that. To my knowledge, there have been no knee injuries earlier in her life to cause this. She is very active with gymnastics and other sports so I do not know where the limits should be placed on continuing her current lifestyle. She knows not to pop the knee anymore even though she states that she feels like it needs to pop and it is hard for her to refrain... I guess it gives her relief, although there is no pain to speak of. So far the MD has just recommended rehab to build the muscle around the knee. I am confused because I do not know if I should allow her to continue with sports. Her legs are already strong due to gymnastics is rehab going to make that much more of a difference? He recommended no brace and no surgery. The MRI showed a smaller than usual acl... what does this mean? Will it continue to grow to compensate? Should I be concerned about any other rare causes of this deformity? Otherwise she is a healthy child with no other joint related issues and she has very strong legs! What would you do if this were your child? Thanks, KIM Email: jmcaulay@charter.net
