Broken Sesamoid Bone

The tip of my sesamoid bone in my left foot has broken off and is floating around in my foot. Sometimes the pain is excrutiating and other times is bearable. I had the same thing happen to my right foot and had surgery to remove the bone. What causes these bones to break?
