Re: Ankle fusion

: I WAS IN A VERY SERIOUSE ACCIDENT 9/13/01
: I had both legs in casts with numerous other fractures. My first visit to the orthopedic doctor
: left me in tears. Like you I was told I had a crushed right heel and I may not walk again. My doctor gave a little help when he said if the pain gets too out of control I could have a subtalor fusion. My pain was like no pain I COULD ever describe. I took the operation in May of 2002, I had complications with infection,so I went through another surgury two weeks later. I have been walking since August 22,2002. My Dr.
: Bruce Ziran out Pittsburgh -UPMC . I feel like
: he gave me back my life.

: Best wishes

To all it may concern:
I had subtalor joint fusion surgery 8/06. My bones never fused and had to have the fusion again 1/07. I have never stopped having pain/swelling. In 8/07 the dr decided maybe the screws were the problem with the pain/swelling. On 9/5/07 I had the two screws removed. As of today, 9/22/07, I am still in excrutiating pain and my foot is very swollen. I too went thru wearing the ski boot for 4 months, used a rollabout and crutches. In 6/07 I was given a Moffo brace, that didnt help, either. I was told to increase the amt of weight gradually on my foot till I was full weight bearing (3 wks from screw removal). Is anyone else still in pain 1 year later? Is there hope? I fell like I should not have had this operation. I had flat feet, and stepped on an airhose at work 3 yrs ago. The pain and swelling after surgery are the same as before surgery. I wonder if this surgery had any benefits?

Plantar Fascia starts as a dull, intermittent pain in heel or arch, progressing to a sharp, persistent pain. A sharp, piercing pain and/or inflammation through heel and foot that usually occurs in the morning or after resting and gradually disappears with walking.
