I'm 51 years old. I fell from a set of scaffolds on to concrete Mon Jan 28, 2008. Was took to the ER and sent home with an appointment to see a foot doctor. I had shattered my right heel. I had surgery that same week on Friday Feb 1. The doctor said the swelling needed to go down before surgery. Was in the hospital for 3 days. Came home and lived on the couch that week and about 5 more. Went back to see the doctor in 1 week after surgery. It looked bad when I first saw it. I didn't think I'd ever be the same. Doctor said I was doing good, to go home stay off of it and keep it elevated at all times. Took pain meds. Then it was 2 weeks to see the doctor. I was in some pain the first 2 weeks but then it wasn't very bad. They put a black boot cast on my third trip to the doctor. Still no walking could be done. I could not do anything on my own. My wife has had to do everything. My bathroom trips and taking a bath was very difficult. I could not do for myself. Thankfully she has helped me with it all. The doctor said it would be 8 weeks after surgery before I could put any weight on my foot. I stayed on meds for about 3 weeks. I have 10 pins and a plate. After 6 weeks they took xrays and everything looked good. Doctor said I could put a small amount of weight on it. They gave me a little shoe to wear, but when I put weight on it I was to wear the boot cast. It is now April 5, 2008 and I seen my doctor this week. He said I could get rid of my walker and start walking on my foot again, but I would still need to wear the boot cast for 2 more weeks. I'm to see the doctor in 4 weeks and he said if everything was alright he would cut me loose. I've been working out on my sons total gym now for about 4 weeks and it has really made a difference. Now that I can start walking I believe working out has put me 3 to 4 weeks ahead. I work in construction so I'm not sure how things will go from here, but to anyone this has happened to, good luck, and God Bless!
