left upper toes/foot cramp in both of us

Early this morning my husband awoke with a severe cramp in his upper left foot and toes. I had him stand and press down on his flattened toes, massaged his calf, and made him a smoothie rich in potassium. He was fine after that. After getting him off to work, I laid down and later awoke with the same cramp in my toes and left foot. What can be the cause of us both awaking with the same cramp & pain?
