Toe Cramping at Night

I'm on Atenolol for high blood pressure, and I avoid salt. Lately I wake up in the night with severe cramping of my toes - and they actually begin to point upward. If I force them down for several minutes, the cramping leaves.

What could this be? Low potassium? Low salt?
