Three months ago I had bilateral surgery on both of my feet for hammer toes. Five days after the surgery one of my toes turned black. I went to the emergency room where they diagnosed it as severe bruising. Later in the week I returned to the podiatrist who also said it was severe bruising. Now, three months later, they are stating that the toe that has not changed is actually gangrene. How does a toe go from severe bruising to gangrene when there has been no change? I also went to an orhtopedic surgeon who confirmed it was gangrene and that I should have the toe surgicaly removed. The podiatrist told me to wait for self amputation. What are the risks of each? Who should I go woth? How do I know for sure that the toe is completely dead?
