Toe Pain

I have severe pain in my right foot, second toe (next to big toe). It is a sharp shooting pain that is not constant. When it "appears" it can be very painful & it causes me to limp alot of the time. I aMm about 35 lbs overweight and I wear shoes with very little arch support on a daily basis. My foot & toe have been x-rayed with an "unremarkable" result. The pain seems to be very localized in the second joint (from top) although if I press on the bottom of my foot just at the base of the toe it is painful. Any ideas? Thank you!
