tear of gastrocnemius

Dear Sir/Madam,

While walking quietly on the street I felt a terrible pain in the right leg and the feeling that something like a string has broken inside my muscle.
I went to my GP who diagnosed 'tear of gastrocnemius'
but could not explain the cause of this strange happening.
After a few days blood was clotting and the leg got swollen.
He recommended an ultrasound scan, but did not prescribe any treatment. I would like to find out about the cause and the treatment of this torn muscle.
Do I need to improve my diet in any way ? Could this be a cause of the muscle being torn ?
I am 50 years old and a rather fit male, although I do not practise any particular sport.
Your reply would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
