Chronic Hip Pain

I've had extreme chronic pain in my hips ever since the 8th month of pregnancy with my first son in 2002. I thought it was from the weight gain, which my doctor agreed and told me to take Aleve for the pain and watch my weight. Well, I did that and still have a hard time sitting on the floor to play with my kids or standing in one place for too long. I wonder if there was some sort of specific exercise or exercise equipment that I could do or use to strengthen something that has obviuosly been weakened.
