Fractured elbow recovery times

Dislocated and fractured my elbow reaching out to break my fall from a skateboard. It seemed to go back in place as I painfully straightened it some. Dr. only saw the fracture, put me in a brace thing(forget what it's called), and never casted my arm. It recovered some and I gained most flexibility back, but it feels arthritic and swells a little. Hoping it's just a long recovery, but I have no idea and thought I'd give this a try. Thanks for any suggestions or comments.
