how does electro-stim work?

My PT just used electro-stim on tense back muscles and she claims that it moves fluids through them.

As a physicist I know that my body is VERY electrically neutral so I don't see how the elecro-stim could move anything (although I do understand how it can mimic nerve signals that relax and tense the muscles).

How does this work? Is it in fact moving anything?
